Sweden

Monthly average temperatures for Stockholm, Sweden, in Fahrenheit

Sweden's weather has many faces. Sweden enjoys a mostly temperate climate despite its northern latitude, mainly because of the Gulf Stream. Stockholm is warmer and milder, while in the mountains of northern Sweden a sub-Arctic climate predominates.

North of the Arctic Circle, the sun never sets for part of each summer, which is called the Midnight Sun, one of Scandinavia's natural phenomena. The opposite occurs in the winter, when night is unending for a corresponding period. These are the Polar Nights (another one of Scandinavia's natural phenomena).

There is an important weather divergence between northern and southern Sweden: the north has a long winter of more than seven months. The south, on the other hand, has winter weather for only two months and a summer of more than four.

Annual rainfall averages 61 cm (24 in) and the maximum rainfall occurs in late summer. Sweden boasts considerable snowfall, and in Sweden's north snow remains on the ground for 6 months each year. You can also take a look at today's current local weather conditions in Sweden.

An interesting phenomenon in Sweden (and some other parts of Scandinavia) is the seasonal change in the length of day and night. In midwinter, darkness prevails. Those dark days and nights are a Scandinavian phenomenon called The Polar Nights.

In midsummer, daylight takes over and there is barely any night darkness during June and July. The name for this is the Midnight Sun.

Iceland

Iceland Average Temperatures in Fahrenheit

Iceland's weather is cool, and the Icelandic climate is temperate. The warm North Atlantic Current ensures generally higher temperatures than in most places of similar latitude in the world. Iceland's winters are mild and windy while the summers are cool which is typical for Scandinavia.

There are some variations in the climate between different parts of the island. Oftentimes, the south coast is warmer, wetter and windier than the north. Snowfall in winters is more common in the north of Iceland.

Iceland's highest air temperature recorded was 30.5°C (86.9°F) in 1939 on the southeastern coast. The lowest temperature was -38°C (- 36.4°F) in 1918 at Grímsstaðir in the northeast of Iceland. Temperature records for Reykjavik are 24.8°C (76.6°F) on 11 August 2004, and -24.5°C (-12.1°F) on 21 January 1918. You can also check the current local weather conditions in Iceland.

Iceland's weather has a seasonal change in the length of day and night, creating unique weather phenomena. In midwinter, there is a period of no sunlight, and darkness prevails. Those dark days and nights are a Scandinavian phenomenon called The Polar Nights. This is perfect to view another weather occurrence: the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights).

Norway

Monthly average temperatures for Oslo, Norway, in Fahrenheit

Norway's weather is warmer than might be expected from its geographical location. Due to the warmth of the Gulf Stream, most of Norway falls within temperate climate.

In Norway, the climate varies considerably from coastal to inland areas. The coastal regions have a climate with relatively mild winters and cooler summer months. Inland areas have a continental climate with colder winters, but warmer summertime (for example Oslo). You can also check the current local weather conditions in Norway.

The Scandinavian country Norway has a climate that easily fluctuates from year to year, especially in its most northern parts. Those are located at the edge of the global temperate zone.

An interesting phenomenon in Norway (and some other parts of Scandinavia) is the seasonal change in the length of day and night. In midwinter, daylight lasts 5-6 hours in southern Norway and in the north, darkness prevails. Those dark days and nights are a Scandinavian phenomenon called the Polar Nights.

Finland

Average and record temperatures for Helsinki Finland, in Fahrenheit

Finland is quite diverse and Finland's weather makes a big difference in which month you will want to travel to this Scandinavian country. Keep in mind that Finnish weather is the warmest in July and the coldest in February. February is also the driest month in Finland, while August weather is the wettest time of year.

The country's location (60°-70° northern parallels) influences the weather in Finland partly, which is common for the weather in Scandinavia. Being located in the Eurasian continent's coastal zone, Finland is both in a maritime and a continental climate.

Note that Finland's weather is not as cold as many think - the Finnish average mean temperatures are higher than that of other regions in the same latitudes (i.e. south Greenland). The temperature is raised mainly by warm airflows from the Atlantic, and also by the Baltic Sea. You can also take a look at the current local weather in the cities of Finland.

The weather in Finland is variable and can change very quickly, which is commeon for weather in Scandinavia. When there are winds from the west, the weather is generally warm and clear in most part of Finland. Finland is located in the zone where tropical and polar air masses meet, so the Finnish weather tends to change quickly, especially in the winter months.

Finland's winters are long and cold. Especially in northern parts of Finland you can find snow on the ground for 90 - 120 days each year. The mildest weather in winter is found in southwestern Finland amongst the countless islands in the Baltic Sea.

The summer offers great weather in Finland. In the Finnish South and central Finland, summer weather is mild and warm, just like in other parts of southern Scandinavia.

Danmark

Average Copenhagen temperatures in Fahrenheit

Danmark's weather is quite mild and the climate of Denmark is temperate, made mild by mostly west winds and by the seas surrounding Denmark almost entirely. The winters are not particularly cold and the summers are mild.

Denmark doesn't have a lot of fluctuation between day and night temperatures, but wind gusts and changes in wind direction can quickly change the weather and temperatures. The wind is stronger in winter.

Denmark's mean temperature in the coldest month (February) is 0°C (32°F), and in the warmest (July) 17°C (63°F). Rain in Denmark comes on a regular basis year-round, there are no true dry periods. The annual rain fall in Denmark averages 61 cm (24 in) of precipitation. Copenhagen has an average of 170 rainy days. The greatest rainfall comes between September and November. Snow is rare. You can also take a look at the current local weather in Denmark's cities.

Because of Denmark's northern location in Europe, the length of the day with sunlight varies greatly. This is typical for Scandinavia. There are short days during the winter with sunrise coming around 8 am and sunset 3:30 pm, as well as beautifully long summer days with sunrise at 3:30 am and late sunsets at 10 pm.
